Sharing His Secrets : Intimate Insights from the Women Who Knew Jesus
Published in Paperback by Multnomah Publishers Inc. (18 January, 2002)
Author: Vickey Banks
Average review score:

Wanna Know a Secret?
Pssst! Yes, you! Come closer. Want to know a secret? Have I got a terrific book for you!
Hey, what am I doing? Let's shout this from the rooftops and share the good news. Vickey
Banks has done a superb job of Sharing His Secrets in her wonderful new book about the
women with whom Jesus shared His life and His most intimate moments. I smiled, I cried, I
dreamed, I grew, all the while knowing that if they could get closer to Jesus then I could, too.
The amazing thing is that I have repeatedly read these Biblical accounts; but this time, thanks
to Banks's fresh insights, I read them with new and knowing eyes. My favorite story was about
the woman at the well. I had always thought that the Samaritan woman was satisfying Jesus's
physical thirst. Banks made me realize that He also thirsted for her love. Amazing! Jesus
thirsting for me. That insight alone has revolutionized my relationship with Him. Sharing His
Secrets will help shape your moments with Jesus to be the most intimate you have ever spent.
And once you learn these secrets, you will likely reveal them to others. These are secrets you
simply must not keep!
-Lynn D. Morrissey, author & speaker

Getting More Intimate With Jesus
Vickey does an outstanding job of bringing you face-to-face with Jesus and the women who encountered Him. You'll not only get great Biblical insights into the women Jesus met, but you'll be personally challenged to grow more intimately acquainted with the Savior. The prompted prayers at the end of each chapter will hit you in the face and bring you closer to the One who continues to make a difference in the lives of women today.

Cherished by the Lord
I had often read about Jesus raising the son of the widow in Nain, but never through the lens of a call to compassion as Vickey Banks develops in her book, "Sharing His Secrets." If you feel nameless and unimportant in this big, wide world, you need Vickey's book as an affirmation that you are named and known to God. Her book draws spiritual lessons from the lives of ten who knew Jesus, including seven whose names are lost to history. They aren't lost, however, to the Lord, who cared for them genuinely in a time when women were second-class citizens. Despite the gap of 2,000 years between our lives and theirs, we share their needs: salvation, compassion, faith, intercession, forgiveness, friendship with God, ways to love God, spiritual warfare, and spiritual intimacy. Vickey mines the few verses devoted to each biography for lessons for today's woman. Her concluding prayers and "Getting Personal" application sessions will help anyone, or any group, embrace their truths.

Talk Your Way Out of Credit Card Debt: Phone Calls to Banks That Saved More Than $43,000 in Interest Charges and Fees

Details taking charge of your credit card debt
"Talk Your Way Out of Credit Card Debt" provides solid advice on getting your rate reduced, annual fees waived, removing a late payment fee, handling disputes, and many other common problems when dealing with credit card companies. More than just advice, it is a collection of detailed examples of phone calls including complete transcripts. Each transcript demonstrates how the author handled a particular issue and the results of the call. Not content to just give one example of getting an interest rate lowered or removing over limit fees, each type of problem has several transcripts so you can get a good feel for what to expect and how to handle it. Most people are not aware of how much power they have when dealing with a credit card company and how to get things changed. This book walks the reader through the process from beginning to end and is a recommended read for anyone looking to gain control of his or her credit card situation.

Bilker's finance evaluation strategies are extremely useful
Talk Your Way Out Of Credit Card Debt by money management expert Scott Bilker is a straightforward, "user friendly" guide to negotiating with credit card banks for better interest rates and getting fees waived. Offering tested strategies for the waiver of annual fees, late payment fees, cash-advance fees and more, shopping for the best credit card deals, comparing loan options, getting refunds, and more, Talk Your Way Out Of Credit Card Debt is very highly recommended reading. Bilker's finance evaluation strategies are extremely useful, even to those who choose to carefully avoid getting into credit card debt in the first place!

Saved money on mistake bank made in their own favor.
I don't know why a book like this has been written sooner. It contains so much common sense advice, I can't believe I didn't think of these things myself sooner. Thanks to Bilker's book I was able to take detailed notes, including names on promised rates for my IRA. When the promised rates didn't appear on my next statement, I was able to talk my way through many layers of resistance and finally get the original deal I was promised. I highly recommend this book to anyone with debt or who deals with any financial institutions for any reason.

A Distant Prayer: Miracles of the 49th Combat Mission

Authors: Joseph Banks and Jerry Borrowman

Pray It Never Happens To You
Joseph Banks was a head of my LDS Stake in Cincinnati. Often he would tell this tale live from the pulpit. As a youth, I somewhat 'checked out' as this is not the type of tale I wanted to hear, but kept it lodged in the back of my mind.

I read this book at the beginning of July, 2002. At month's end, Joe was back in Cincinnati to tell his tale once more to the congregation. How amazing that, even after all this country has experienced in recent years, the people there were only half-tuned. One even had the courage to question its Truth.

Want to get the Royal Hell scared out of you?! Read this one. Be sure and pray that this Never occurs to you.

Touching & a Must for Those interested in WWII & Religion
A book I will never forget. I could never imagine experiencing the hell that this man went through. I am so grateful that we have men like this hero who protect us. In light of recent national catastrophe's, this book is not only topical, but a story that will stay with me forever

Captivating
We bought the unabridged audio version and put it in the tape player in the car on a long trip. My 13 year old daughter and 11 year old son were both "glued" to their seats. Every time we stopped, they were the first ones to make sure I started it again. A very gripping story that holds your attention from the very first page. The man had incredible faith. His life was spared numerous times. I definately recommend the book.

Master Crossword Puzzle Dictionary
incredible source for resolving difficult crosswords..best resource on the market, bar none...wish the publisher would do another printing...

Best Crossword Puzzle Dictionary Ever Published!
I have a thumb indexed hardcover version that I just happened upon at a Navy Exchange Store in California. When I bought it, I had no idea how much I'd use it. It has gone with me around the world on several different aircraft carriers, and has been used by me and my shipmates as we whiled away the hours at sea. Since then the book has gone out of print, and that is a tradgedy! This book has to be the best of its kind. It's not as easy to use as some of the newer crossword dictionaries, but once you learn HOW to use it, there's nothing that even comes close to it in content. And it comes in handy as a regular dictionary when you come across a word or foreign phrase in a book are article that isn't in your standard dictionary. I've found information in this tome that I couldn't find anywhere else. If you love to read and/or do crosswords, this book is indispensible. My edition is still in fair shape, but I'd love to see a revised edition. What was Doubleday thinking when they stopped the presses?

top of the line, the Lexus of linguistics
Best dictionary I own not only for crosswords but for school papers,I would like to find it on a computer cd to go along with my New York Times puzzle site.

Once upon a Time on the Banks
Published in Paperback by Washington Square Press (September, 1991)
Authors: Cathie Pelletier and Jane Rosenman
Average review score:

A Fun Read
I read this book in short bursts so that I could savor the characters. What fun. To really get the most from this book, I recommend reading The Funeral Makers first.

Great Read...
This is the second book I've read by Cathie Pelletier and the story keeps getting better. The Funeral Maker being the first of the trilogy, I can't wait to read the third. These caracters just won't quit. What a great read when you just want to relax and have a good laugh. I will definitely read every book by this author and I dare say if you read one, you're hooked. Keep them coming.

Terrific, as Always
For the unabridged flavor of northern Maine, Cathie Pelletier delivers. I've read three of her books so far, and they've all been good. For a good story, I recommend them strongly.

The Rise and Fall of Palestine: A Personal Account of the Intifada Years

brutally honest account of the palestinian intifada experien
a brutally honest account of the palestinian intifada experience as written by a jewish american. exposes fallacies in the representation of the case as well as in foreign policy. very necessary in understanding the israel-palestine conflict

Jewish but not Zionist
As a Jewish woman living in the U.S. it was difficult for me to hear but one side of the story in the Israeli-Arab conflict. That side was the Zionist perspective. It wasn't until I spent time in Israel (ironic as this is) that I began to understand the fallacies in the arguments I grew up hearing. I read this book after picking it up at a friend's house, and now I'm feeling brave enough to buy a copy of my own. That courage comes from Finkelstein. I feel like I'm in good company. There ARE other Jews who can see and dare to shed some light on the OTHER SIDE--the Palestinian viewpoint. Finkelstein presents us with the Palestinian perspective in the context of the Israel-Arab conflict with such integrity and simplicity. As descendents of a terribly oppressed group of people, I whole-heartedly support all efforts to stop dehumanizing the "enemy." Finkelstien shows us the humanness of Palestinians.

Spectacular, courageous, a must-read
Finkelstein's book is that rare gem of a monumental work housed within a slim volume. What makes his ideas so astonishing, in addition to their being meticulously researched and footnoted, is that his parents were survivors of the Nazi holocaust. Based on encounters with Elie Wiesel and the like, one would not expect a Jew of this background to have such a profound understanding of the Palestinian people and of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

This book is a must-read in that it convincingly defies, with powerfully sculpted arguments and towering research, the tired and frequently hypocritical views of the New York Times and other news authorities.

Finkelstein will convince you.

Using Offshore Havens For Privacy And Profits
Published in Paperback by Paladin Press (September, 1994)

Average review score:

Investing Offshore
Before going into the many reasons for offshore investing, let us quickly define the term "offshore". To put it simply, offshore means outside of the jurisdiction of one's country and so the term "offshore" should be considered to be almost synonymous with foreign. In other words, offshore investing is investing outside of one's country. Traditionally, offshore investing has been considered to be an activity of the very wealthy but due to improvements in technology and the highly visible trend towards "globalization", that scenario is no longer valid. How noticeable is the trend in offshore investing? Well, it is now a billion dollar industry that has forced most all major financial institutions to place offices all across the globe to better service the investor's ever increasing demand to be able to take advantage of the financial opportunities now available worldwide.

Formerly stagnant economic systems of the excommunist bloc, countries like Russia or Poland, and the developing nations of regions like Latin America are all embracing the free-market capitalistic system and are opening their doors to global investors. Access to capital is critical for such economies to grow and develop. This is not a short-term fad but rather a long-term economic need and a growth opportunity for the astute investor. Clearly, if your portfolio is not invested in foreign markets, you may well be missing out on significant investment opportunities from around the world. Furthermore, if you look overseas for investment opportunities, you can invariably discover that you have a vastly greater basket of funds, markets and interest earning, tax-deferred possibilities than those on offer to the domestic investor. The choice is clear. Step up to the plate and stake your fair share of the potential gains.

Take advantage of the hottest financial trend today!
An offshore haven is simply a country other than your own. To an American, it's anywhere you bank outside of the U.S. Why invest in offshore havens? Because when you invest outside your own country, you are no longer tied to its restrictive financial laws, and can protect your assets, save taxes and build your wealth easier.

Most of us have been hoodwinked into thinking that offshore havens are illegal, too risky, or otherwise unworthy of consideration. Don't believe it. Financial expert Adam Starchild will dispel myths and misconceptions about offshore banking and reveal how you can:

Achieve total secrecy and and financial privacy
Transfer your money offshore, and keep it safe from lawsuits, creditors, the IRS, etc.
Use offshore havens to legally avoid, defer or minimize taxes
Invest globally and build your wealth
Pick the offshore haven that best meets your objectives
Choose the right offshore bank and maintain an account -- easily and safely
Do business offshore -- and reap extraordinary benefits
And more!

The Worldwide Assault on Wealth
Today your wealth and ability to do with it as you please are in great danger. Not only is there a proliferation of thieves and parasites armed with sophisticated electronic weapons that can steal our money, but the government itself -- the very institution we should rely on to guard our rights -- is after our wealth more persistently and maliciously than any thief in the world.

All over the world, governments are becoming more and more predatory. They reach for more and more power, and they squeeze more and more money out of their citizens... by any means they can. There is almost nowhere on earth your money is safe anymore.

Powers to confiscate money, under the guise of "drug laws," are growing in Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, and many other countries around the world.

Historically, appropriation of wealth has taken many forms -- and it's gone on for centuries. For instance, in East Germany alone, 9,870 industrial and commercial enterprises and about one-third of the entire land area capable of agricultural or forestry use were confiscated between 1945 and 1949. The same thing has gone on throughout South America, Africa, Asia, and Europe.

Do you do business in the U.S.? You should know that new banking regulations make it a federal crime not to report certain transactions -- of as little as $3,000. There is no requirement that the money be involved in any criminal activity -- it is a crime to simply not report the transaction. The penalty? Liability for a five-year prison sentence and a $250,000 fine. And -- the law allows the federal government to confiscate any funds they allege to be involved. Plus, bank tellers can collect huge rewards -- up to $150,000 -- for turning you in, if you are subsequently convicted of a criminal act, and subject to a civil fine or forfeiture of money or property.

Governments all over the world are trying to figure out how to crack down on the Internet and on-line communications. They're deathly afraid they'll lose their ability to tax, seize, and control their citizens' money.

The recent Bre-X scandal is a perfect example of how you can be cleverly robbed from anywhere in the world. Bre-X was one of the hot mining companies listed in Canada, but the investors who were fleeced were from all over the world. In a nutshell, fake drilling reports ran the stock of Bre-X from pennies all the way to $22.50, after a 10-1 split. When it turned out the reports were fake, some $4 billion in wealth disappeared almost overnight as the stock plunged.

As you can see, these threats are global. Governments don't protect you -- they're just part of the problem. And other threats cross borders and continents in the blink of an eye.

It doesn't matter whether you're wealthy or average, an individual or a company, or where you are in the world -- the assaults on wealth, from government and crooks, is growing, and you are at risk.

Adam Starchild believes that your wealth should be secure -- safe from the government and safe from thieves. In Using Offshore Havens for Privacy & Profit he shows you some specific strategies to protect your wealth.

Wrong Feet First : A Gift of Stories for Your Inside-Out Kind of Day

Authors: Arta D. Banks and Dixie Van de Flier Davis
Average review score:

A Soul Touching Read
The stories in this book can bring tears to your eyes, a smile to your lips, and also allow you time for introspection and the ability to walk down your own "memory lane". Ms. Banks spins a delightful series of memories and tales, and the book is a wonderful gift to share with friends and family members.

A story straight to the heart...
It was Thanksgiving 2001 when my Aunt came for a visit and gave a copy of Arta's book to my mother, sister, and me. "Read the story on page 45" she said, and to our surprise there was a description of a man we all loved and miss very much. "Mr. Bob" was my uncle. The husband to my aunt, brother to my mother, and always my sisters and my favorite uncle. I will always be grateful for Arta's story and hope someday to say thank you in person. Her stories tug at your heart strings and bring a smile to your lips. What a remarkable woman!

An inspiring collection of true stories
In Wrong Feet First: A Gift Of Stories For Your Inside-Out Kind Of Days, Arta Banks presents a heartwarming, entertaining, and occasionally inspiring collection of true stories illustrating and celebrating life in good times and tough times. A single mom with six children (five of whom are adopted), Arta has also taken in kids born with drug addiction, fleeing abusive homes, and experienced having her youngest daughter diagnosed with HIV when just two and a half months old. Drawn from Arta's personal experiences and journal recordings, Wrong Feet First is candid, emotionally moving, and a testament to the resilience and endurance of the human spirit -- as well as a celebration of the joys that balance sorrows, the power of hope, and the beauty life has to offer in even the most humble of circumstances.

A Dedicated Man: An Inspector Banks Mystery
Published in Hardcover by Penguin Books Canada Ltd. (January, 1989)
Author: Peter Robinson
Average review score:

A dedicated policeman
Second books are often a bit like second musical albums after big debuts. Good, but somehow lacking the magic of the first effort. That's how I feel about "A Dedicated Man". I really debated between giving it three or four stars.

It easily earns three stars as an least average British police procedural. The writing is competent. The clues (or lack thereof) all make sense in in the end. It gets another half star for its many thoughtful observations of the Yorkshire environment - both the landscape and the mentality of the people. I'm pretty much rounding up the score after that. I like Banks and plan to keep reading the series which has received considerable praise in recent years. Still, I haven't found anything so fascinating that I'm going to recommending the book or series to friends---yet.

traditional, unchallenging British mystery
When the body of local historian Harry Steadman is found buried beneath a dry-stone wall near the village of Helmthorpe, Chief Inspector Alan Banks finds himself presented with a extremely puzzling case. And why is it puzzling? Because, aside from a minor disagreement with his friend and local farmer over his selling of some lad, Harry was invariably liked y everybody, ad even that minor inconsequential argument was no reason to kill somebody. Harry was a kind, thoughtful, and respected man, whom everyone liked and about whom no one can find a bad word to say. There seems to be absolutely no motive for his murder. And yet, buried somewhere, there must be one'

Then, Sally Lumb, a local teenager whom Banks suspects of knowing more than she is telling, alarmingly disappears'

Very much an English 'cosy' in the tradition of writers like Ann Granger, this is another success for Peter Robinson. There seems to be nothing exceptionally challenging in these early novels, but they're very enjoyable reads. Robinson writes good prose, and structures his mysteries excellently. He develops his characters well, even if they themselves are nothing out of the ordinary. Banks is an excellent lead, very real and with a dry humour there is definitely something of Morse in him. But, it would be nice if we got to meet his family a bit more pretty soon'

Anyone who likes a nice, traditional, well-crafted and satisfying British mystery is guaranteed to like the books of Peter Robinson.

British police procedural
When Harry Steadman is murdered, Inspector Alan Banks and his officers are called in to find the killer. Because the murdered man was a genial professor, Banks has a great deal of difficulty finding anyone who might be a suspect. Everyone seemed to genuinely like Harry Steadman. When a young girl is murdered because of what she knows, the search intensifies and when the murderer is unmasked, everyone is stunned. The second mystery in Peter Robinson's series features an interesting mystery and an appealing main character.

The Man Who Made Wall Street: Anthony J. Drexel and the Rise of Modern Finance
Published in Hardcover by University of Pennsylvania Press (October, 2001)
Author: Dan Rottenberg
Average review score:

Finally, Some Added Insight On Anthony Drexel
"The Man Who Made Wall Street" is exceptionally written. Not an esoteric financial biography, yet deep enough for an intellectual discussion. Within the folds of 200 pages, you get a sense of the real person behind the financial machine. It is a brilliant biographical account of the leading figure in the financial world of the nineteenth century. There are many things you can take from this book. For me, it revealed that even 'starving' artists can find creative ways to make it and that there is often more to the person who chooses to remain behind the scenes.

a good read
As a great-great-great grandson of A.J. Drexel, it was a pleasure to read this book and to learn about my famous ancestors. It is crazy to think that many of his progeny have a difficult time balancing their checkbooks today. Before this book, my knowlege of the Drexels had been limited to family lore.

The Man Who Made Wall Street
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Dan Rottenberg's informative book The Man Who Made Wall Street. The book contains all there is to know about the wise and amazingly successful nineteenth century financier Anthony Drexel and the profound role he played as a mentor to the young J. Pierpont Morgan. I especially enjoyed reading about financial systems and processes in nineteenth century America that author Rottenberg describes so well in his new book.
